Local Milestones
  1. June 1982 Certain gay male patients of a Portland public sexually transmitted disease clinic are noted to complain of unusual symptoms of fatigue and lymph node swelling without obvious cause.

  2. October 1982 First patient death in a Portland hospital from what appears to be the disease AIDS.

  3. January 1983 A group of Portland physicians and public health officials begin to meet informally to discuss issues of caring for persons with AIDS . . . the beginning of The Oregon AIDS Task Force.

  4. April 1985 Widespread HIV testing becomes available in Oregon through public health departments and physicians’ offices.

  5. July 1986 The Research & Education Group, a community based HIV research consortium, is formed to increase access to HIV therapies in Oregon and SW Washington. The first clinical trial testing AZT begins in Portland.

  6. September 1989 The Research & Education Group is awarded a 5 year $3.7 million contract by the National Institutes for Health for HIV clinical research.

  7. December 1990 The Research & Education Group Community Input Group is formed to ensure participation in HIV trials by traditionally under-represented populations at risk for HIV disease.

  8. October 1995 A second 5 year award of $4.9 million is awarded to The Research & Education Group by the NIH.

  9. November 1996 The Research & Education Group initiates its 30th clinical trial for HIV treatment and has enrolled over 2000 people living with HIV disease in clinical research trials.
